An obsession is a thought that generates discomfort. A compulsion is the action (physical or mental) that we perform to reduce the anxiety generated by the obsession. For example, an obsession would be to think that my house is going to burn when I leave if I have left an appliance plugged in. The compulsion would check all the plugs before leaving home just in case.
We all have small obsessions or compulsions, the bad thing is when they become exaggerated and affect our daily lives. They can have serious consequences and take a long time. That is why it is essential to stop them as soon as possible. To do this, techniques such as exposure and cognitive restructuring are used to help us realize that if we do not perform compulsion, our anxiety decreases in the long run.
